Period 9/10 Blog #1 September 19

In the short story, “Initiation” by Sylvia Plath, Millicent and Liane Morris, two pledges going through initiation to the high school sorority, were discussing what it would be like when they were finally in the sorority.  After Liane explains that she knows what it will be like because her sister belonged, Millicent realizes “...it’s just a sort of exclusive social group…”

“I guess so… though that’s a funny way of putting it.  But it sure gives a girl prestige* value.  My sister started going steady with the captain of the football team after she got in.  Not bad, I say.”

*prestige- relating to status or power to impress

After carefully reading Liane’s response regarding her feelings of joining the sorority,  what does she believe belonging will do for her?  How does Liane value herself as a sorority sister as opposed to before she was invited?  Pay specific attention to what she thinks being in the sorority will do for a girl.  Do you believe Liane’s views on the perks of sorority are healthy or is she putting too much value on belonging?  Explain in detail in no less than 200 words.

  1. She things that belonging she will make friends. She wants to make friends so she can fit in. She valued herself to not be a second class person so she wants to join. I think Liane is putting to much value in to it because they are bulling her so she can get in. I think they are taking advantage of her

    1. I agree with you pat because shes thinks that joining the sorority will make her popular, have many friends, a bf etc. she really needs to stop putting to much value on herself because she is going to notice later on

  2. Well Liane thinks joining the sorority will get her popular and get her a good looking boyfriend. She's also defiantly putting to much value thinking that the sorority will help her in her near future. She should of stop thinking about herself and being greedy but I think she needs to get friends and just leave the sorority because she thinks she'll have a nice future

  3. I think that Liane wanted to join to make new friends and be popular. but the friends that she has are not her friends at all she thought the sorority would be all good but the people aren't that good at all. the girls that Liane were friends with all they did was bully her and put her in a basement with an egg in her hair. She thinks she will have a good time but really she shouldn't of started with the sorority in the first place

My sister started going steady with the captain of the football team after she got in. Not bad, I say.” Liane’s response regarding her feelings of joining the sorority, is that she thinks it is good idea if you think about it in that way. Like how she said though that's a funny way of way of putting it. Now that liane is a sorority sister I think she sets her self to a higher standard. And before she was invited she wasn't as confident as before. I think of it as joining a club. You get it, and then they are your new friends and I kinda like your family. I think she is way over her head. About this it's not like she is becoming the president of the United States. I think she is putting to much value on the sorority. It doesn't even sound that fun. It sounds like once you are in you are committed the rest of your career. Like once you get in there is no going out.

  5. Well what I think if Liane joins the sorority is that she will think that she is it and probably at everything she does and says because she is no longer the person trying to join the sorority she is now the person going down to everyone else standards and no one would ever want to go down to there low standards because of what they do and she would just love herself for doing that if she was that idiotic. In my opinion I think she is putting to much value on belonging because like I said before they are no good and everyone who didn't join had the right mind to do that and do something else and join other groups or do nothing at all because that's better than what Liane is doing to getting in this sorority because there is better things to do than doing that. I mean no one deserves what the sorority did to those people because they don't like you for you.I think no one should ever change for that group because if no one likes you for who you are you shouldn't change and I know it's hard of saying it than doing it but you should turn your head the other way and you should just know that you are better.

But being popular isnt as important as finishing college and getting a degree.

    1. I agree with you. I think that she just wanted to have more friends and be noticed by more people. An she was more opposed cause she knew what they were doing was wrong in many ways.

  8. In the short story “Initation” by Sylvia Plath it’s kind of bullying in my eyes. I don’t think its right that these kids get to make them look bad or embarrass them to get into a stupid sorority. I think that it shouldn’t be like that even if it’s to make friends. You can better friends then that cause these people obviously don’t care about your feelings they just want to see if they can get you to the breaking point and see how desperate you are. Liane’s invite made her happy cause she gets to make friends but they just cracked an egg over your head and wouldn’t let one of your good friends in cause of her “appearance”. Before she was even accepted it wasn’t that big of a deal but now she’s in power in a way cause she was excepted and all those other friends don’t matter anymore ‘ all that matters is being popular an excepted into the sorority that wants to make you look bad and wants to see how what people says effects you and wants to make sure they have the prettiest and meanest girls they can get so they can bash people and put them. Being someone that’s never excepted I don’t agree with this at all and even if I was excepted I don’t want to be surrounded with those kids of people. This how I think Laine was thinking when she wasn’t really thinking .
