Period 4/5 Blog #1 September 19

In the short story, “Initiation” by Sylvia Plath, Millicent and Liane Morris, two pledges going through initiation to the high school sorority, were discussing what it would be like when they were finally in the sorority.  After Liane explains that she knows what it will be like because her sister belonged, Millicent realizes “...it’s just a sort of exclusive social group…”

“I guess so… though that’s a funny way of putting it.  But it sure gives a girl prestige* value.  My sister started going steady with the captain of the football team after she got in.  Not bad, I say.”

*prestige- relating to status or power to impress

After carefully reading Liane’s response regarding her feelings of joining the sorority,  what does she believe belonging will do for her?  How does Liane value herself as a sorority sister as opposed to before she was invited?  Pay specific attention to what she thinks being in the sorority will do for a girl.  Do you believe Liane’s views on the perks of sorority are healthy or is she putting too much value on belonging?  Explain in detail in no less than 200 words.

  1. Lina thinks the soroity club will help her become popular and that more people will want to be her friend. But in the long run it is just a social club that will not help her or benefit her in the future. Just because people judge you doesnt mean you have to change for them you are who you are so thats what you believe and stay true to yourself and be proud that you are you and no one else can be. Because then people are going to wanna be you knowing you dont care what people think of you so Lina should just be herself and do what she likes to do! She is a smart girl and a stong confident girl that shouldnt join this club knlwing it will change her

  2. In the short story, "Initiation" by Slyvia Plath, Millicent and Liane Morris, two pledges going through initiation to the high school sorority, were discussing what it would be like when they were finally in the sorority. Liane believes that joining the club will help her get her name out there and that she wants to be popular. But that is not the case. Joining the club will not help her get popular but it will make her life worse. Before she joined the club, she was nervous and shy. After joining the club, she become more outgoing but it was still new for Liane. In the end, Liane does not make the right decision joining the sorority club if she just wants to join it for the popularity. Liane is putting too much value on belonging because like I said before, she thinks this will make her more popular and she makes it a huge deal. Being in the sorority club is great, but doing it just for popularity makes her worry too much about the little things. As you can see, Liane doesn't realize the real meaning for the sorority club.

  3. In the story "Initiation" Lina thinks this club will make her popular. Just because ever since her sister joined she was steady with the captain of the football team. Popular is not about dating the captain of the football team is about having trust worthy friends. You have to earn your friends not get them by joining a club. You have to be nice and have respect to that person. You also earn your friends from a good personality and always being kind. She should just be herself and not coy any one. My mo tells me to be a leader not a follower. She shouldn't listen to any one else she should just do her own thing instead of trying to be cool when she could be so much more popular then the whole club combined. She doesn't need that club always be yourself and never doubt yourself for anything. So in conclusion she doesn't need that club to be popular.

  5. Lina thinks that joining the sorority will make her popular. To conclude, Lina thinks that she will get more friends joining the sorority but I don't think it will. Lina has really high vales as a sorority sister before she was invited. I don't think Lina made the right decision joining the sorority club just to be popular. I think all Linas thinking is ill be so popular and everyone will want to be my friend and people will notice me. but that's not going to happen because the sorority club isn't what lina thinks its going to be. It will be much worse.
