Period 3 Blog #2 September 26

In honor of Derek Jeter’s retirement, I would like you to reflect on the following quote and respond in no less than 200 words.

Jeter says a key to success is “that you’re not afraid to fail.  I’m not afraid to fail.  I’ve done it quite a bit.”

Do you feel this is a valuable statement and can be applied to anyone, not just a professional athlete?  Explain how this can be applied to your everyday life by using specific examples.

  1. I do believe that the key to success is to not be afraid to fail. I think this quote tells you that everyone messes up. I can not name one person who has not made a mistake, big or small. This can even include being a student in school. Have you ever failed a test or quiz? I am sure everyone has because I know I definitely have. I have also done a lot of things for my singing. Of course I know that I won't get into everything I audition for. This even happened to me today in math. I did not get our lesson at all in math. I failed to understand the lesson. What Jeter and I are saying is that it is perfectly fine to fail. However, if you fail, does not mean you should just give up. That is the exact opposite of what you should do. You should try even HARDER on the thing you failed at. It is okay to fail once at something, but it is not okay if you give up after failing. Remember, quitters never win, winners never quit. I don't think anyone should give up on anything. This quote can inspire many people to keep on going, even if you fail.

  2. Derek Jeter's quote "that you’re not afraid to fail. I’m not afraid to fail. I’ve done it quite a bit,” can apply to anyone not just athletes. For example, in school. If you can't figure out a problem, don't be afraid to ask because if you don't do anything about your situation in return you're just going to a lower grade. Another example of this could be if you're a dancer or something. If you can't get a move down or something, don't worry about it. All you have to do is keep practicing and eventually you'll figure out how to do the move. In conclusion, I believe that Derek Jeter's quote applies to not only athletes, but everyone in the world. He wants everyone to know that it's not a bad thing to fail in life. Everyone will fail more than once, and that's okay. But it's bad to be afraid of failing because it will happen to you.

  3. This valuable statement can be applied to anyone in the world, not just professional athletes. No matter who you are, at some point in your life you will fail at something. Some people will more than others, but all of us do it. When you fail and give up, you are making the wrong decision. After you fail you should continue trying and trying until you succeed, because failing is a natural part of a functioning society. An example of this is if your whole family plays and loves football, but you are very bad at it. You could accept being a disgrace to your family, or you could keep trying. If you keep trying, you may become better, and find that just like your family you love the sport. Why would you want to give up after the first try, when if you are not afraid to fail, you will do better?

  4. I believe that Derek Jeter’s quote “that you’re not afraid to fail. I’m not afraid to fail. I’ve done it quite a bit.” applies to everyone not just athletes. Say for example that you took a test on the civilizations of Ancient China, in history class and failed it. Yes you would probably be upset at first, but it would give you the strength and courage to work and study harder for the next test so you will pass it. If you’re trying a new recipe and it turns out being a complete disaster. Don’t just throw in the towel! Keep trying to fix your failures and mistakes because, “a mistake is not a mistake until you refuse to fix it.” In conclusion Derek Jeter’s quote was not just advice for athletes, but advice for everyone to take. That everyone is going to have failures in life, it just depends on how you try fix them.

  5. I believe that Derek Jeter's quote, "that you're not afraid to fail. I'm not afraid to fail. I've done it quite a bit." can apply to anyone. For instance, if you fail a test that doesn't mean that you're going to give up. Failing only makes you want to succeed even more. Failure leads you to push yourself even harder to pass. Another example is applying for a job. If you don't get a job that doesn't mean you just give up. You go out and apply for several jobs. If you fail getting a job it only makes you go out and try finding a new different job to apply yourself to. Failure in the end literally just helps you to push yourself harder. Failure is the key to success.

  6. Derek Jeters quote to answer a question, is very valuable. The quote is, “That you’re not afraid to fail. I’m not afraid to fail. I’ve done it quite a bit.” This quote can relate to anyone and everyone, because everyone fails. There is not one person who never failed at something, failure is how we learn. Yes, failure can disappoint people, or get them mad but there is a lesson to it. For example, scientist fail all the time. To figure out if the hypothesis is right, you have to try it and you mostly fail at first, but you learn your mistake and get it right the next time. When you fail, you don’t just give up, you work harder and fix your mistake. Another example, during one of my basketball games I delayed my jump to intercept the ball and thats where I failed to get the ball. Although, the next chance I got to intercept the ball I knew the timing of when to jump. Failure isn’t just in sports, it’s in everything you do! When someone fails, people say something or laugh at them, but everyone fails so they are laughing at themselves too. Sports is where you can have failures, but you can failures everywhere you go, and I think we shouldn’t be afraid to fail. Failure shows you that you have tried, and it doesn’t mean to give up, keep trying!

  7. I feel like this is a very valuable statement and can be used in almost every aspect of life. If you try something new you should never just expect to do it perfect right away, you're going to fail sometimes. The thing to do is not worry about failing, but trying to see what you did wrong and improve upon that. If everyone had just given up at the first sign of failure we wouldn't have anything that we had today. If Albert Einstein had just given up at the first failure he had, we wouldn't know any thing that we know today. If Steve Jobs had given up at his first failure we wouldn't have any apple products, they even mad a movie about that! If that doesn't tell you to never give up then i don't know what will. The only thing that should worry you when you do something is not trying again if you fail, you should never give up on something that you truly believe in, even if you fail at it.

  8. I feel this is valuable statement to the right person. If you are afraid to fail then you are most likely to embarrass yourself when you fail like today in gym we were playing California kick ball and for those of you who are in my gym you know what I did. I got the ball, I threw it, there were six people in front of me, and I missed every one of them by nearly a foot. I wound up getting two people out because they were running and I was at third base and they were paying attention so I got two outs at the price of one. This shows the quote very well because I was not afraid to fail because I knew if I did, it would not be the end of the world for me. Even though everybody laughed at me, I also laughed because I know I have a bad aim. I cannot hit a ball for my life because I have bad coordination. You don’t need to be a professional athlete for this quote to be applied to you because if you look at me I am nothing close to a pro athlete.

  9. Derek Jeter's quote, a key to success is "that you're not afraid to fail. I'm not afraid to fail. I've done it quite a bit", is a very valuable statement. Failure is rated on different scales to different people. Failure to one person could be someone else's success. I agree with Jeter's idea in some aspects of life but not in others. For instance, people never want to fail, but not everyone wants to put in the work it takes to succeed. Jeter has accomplished goals that no other professional baseball players have accomplished, but he was only able to do that because he learned from his failures. Jeter's statement can be valuable in anyone's life, not just professional athletes. When I play football, there are many times when I'm not able to make the sack that I want to make, so technically, I fail, but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop trying to get the sack. Failure in things is how we learn from our mistakes and get better. People sometimes think they have failed, but in the eyes of someone else, they may have succeeded. If my football team loses a game, then my team members think we have failed. However, our coaches may have thought that we played an excellent game. To us, we failed, to the coaches we succeeded because we played a great game, and are learning to overcome adversity.

  10. I do feel that this quote could be applied to everyday life and not just professional athletes. Everyone fails in life at some point. If no one failed life would be boring. Failing is what makes life interesting. I fail all the time and I'm not ashamed of it. It makes me want to try harder and do better at things. For example, tests a lot of people fail tests but they don't let that get to them they just try harder on the next test to try and boost up their grade. Another example is sports, a lot of teams lose but then try harder next game. I am a straight A student and I fail a lot sometimes I get 80's or 70 's but it makes me want to try harder next time. That's what failure is a continuous circle that never ends. You can never take failure away it will always be apart of you whether you like it or not. In conclusion failure is a good thing it's how you handle it. That is what makes you or breaks you.

  11. Jeter says "a key to success is that you’re not afraid to fail.I’m not afraid to fail.I’ve done it quite a bit.” This quote may be inspirational to a lot of people, but first off Jeter has not failed a lot. I think this quote is not impressive at all. I googled quotes regarding failure and I managed to find over 833 quotes extrememly similar. Derek Jeter's Net worth is fifty one million dollars. That's pretty good for a failure. This quote is kind of relatable to Derek Jeter. Just because he retired doesn't mean we should glorify it. I don't hate Derek Jeter, but there are plenty better ones “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”- Oscar Wilde, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”-Gandhi. These quotes are true to heart quotes, Especially Gandhi's so this quote is not true to heart . In conclusion this quote is not as great as everyone thinks it is, and you should pick another quote about failure such as “You never fail until you stop trying.”-Einstein. Failure quotes are fine, but Jeter's quote are not as great as you think . This quote can help many athletes, but I don't think that Derek Jeter should have said it.

    1. When he says this quote he dosent mean failing now he mean when he started. Not many people remember when Jeter has actually started playing but I've watched his first games and he has fail not majorly but to him it is because him blowing games really hits him because he was all about winning.

  12. Derek Jeter says "A key to success is that you're not afraid to fail. I'm not afraid to fail, I've done it quite a bit." This quote is meant for all people. Everyone fails a lot in there lifetime. Its a given that you will fail because no one is perfect. Derek Jeter failed a lot in his career. He struck Hundreds of times in his career, but that didn't phase him he rose to the occasion and played better the next at bat or game. That is Derek Jeter, he has a no quit attitude. We could all relate to Derek Jeter's Quote because if we fail a test you shouldn't be sad about it and mope around. You should study harder and try your best. It doesn't matter if you fail its what's you do after that counts. This quote is truly inspirational to all, not just professional athletes.

  13. I think the quote"The key to success is that you're not afraid to fail. I am not afraid to fail. I've done it quite a bit." can be related to anyone not just athletes.for example I have failed before in something many non-professional athletes have failled in before. The part I failed in was in baseball where I had lots of trouble hitting the ball at all. For an entire season I had at most three hits and a lot of strikeouts. I worked on this by regularly going into an indoor facility and practicing with my dad for long months and after that season when I started my next my swing is back to normal. I was hitting the ball nice and hard and was out of my slump and succeeding again. This quote still has lots of value out of proffessional sports and relates to Jeters early years of pro baseball very well

  14. The key to be successful is you have to not be afraid to fail? Derek’s got some editing to do on his statement. You see, his point is clear, but can be touched upon with some new words to get the full meaning out. Saying that a key to be successful is being okay with failure, is like saying “Oh, you can’t tie your shoes? Well maybe if you believe enough, you can do it next time!” I understand the words are meant for motivation but the statement is not finished. Derek Jeter’s point is that you can’t give up, and you need to be able to take the worst in order to improve. I would like to say you need to be able to see the possibility of failure, but not consider it as an okay situation. For example, let’s say that I got a 75% on my latest math test. Although I should accept the fact I got a bad grade on said test, I should not be okay with it, and only tell myself that I’ll do better next time. The right thing to do is to learn from that mistake. Instead of maybe cramming in all the information at once before the test, I should have studied a night or two prior. Just imagine Albert Einstein gave up after failed attempts at trying to understand out universe, if Martin Luther King gave up trying to fight discrimination, if countless countries gave up against fighting Germany’s most infamous dictator during WWII. Our history would never have brought us here, and our lives would be different, for the worse. Our universal timeline is on a very delicate thread that cannot go without improvement here and there. If you let one small thing surpass you, you may let more conflicts in your life overcome you. Maybe on test today is an election tomorrow. One bad fight could result in a war lost in days to come. We can’t give up. In order to make this universe the way it should be, you need to give it your all. We need people who won’t just accept defeat. We need those who will question it, learn from it, and teach others how to overcome it before it occurs. This is the point that Derek Jeter is trying to point out, whether he knew it or not. I believe he should have truly said: “The key to be successful is to push yourself to your best. If you push too hard and fall, pick yourself back up and be more careful next time.” Because truly, there will be a point in time you fall into a pit, and quite frankly, may just not want to get out of. Over time you adapt to the pit, and make it comfortable. You should not become comfortable, you should get the best you can and then push for others to be at your height, to free think their way to greatness.

  15. Derek Jeters quote "the key to success is that you're not afraid to fail, i'm not afraid to fail. I've done it quite a bit" has a lot of meaning behind it. Now the question is do I think its a valuable statement? yes, I do. I think this because not only does it relate to professional athletes but it also relates to everyday people. Jeter is trying to come across saying that no one ever starts off professional. We all start at amateur level or square one. Nothing just comes easy you're going to fall and get hurt but one thing is to never quit. Failing only helps you get better at what you're going for. This can be applied to my everyday life when it comes to dance. Of course im not professional or the best of the best. I fall and fail but that only helps me get better. Not giving up is the best thing I've ever did in my life. Working hard is the key to success

  16. This quote is a very good one. There is no better way to say that. This is a very valuable statement and can be applied to anyone. If your afraid to fail, then you will never succeed. You will never succeed because you already give up. You ARE going to fail in life, even Jeter failed. He said it himself. Not just athletes, but everyone fails. For example, I myself failed many times in my lifetime. One time I kept trying throw a football perfectly and make it spiral. But, I just couldn't do it. It was too hard for me and football wasn't my thing. I just did not like it and I was not good at it. Anyway, I just kept trying. My friends helped me and they were laughing and joking around. It was fun to be failing to be honest haha. It was funny and fun at the same time. Eventually I got it. I did a couple spirals to my friend and I was proud of myself. Not because I did a spiral, but because I never gave up after so many trys. Not giving up and them succeeding is the best feeling in the world. You accomplish something after so many challenges and you are relieved. You are pleased with your self. I agree with Jeter. A very smart baseball player.

  17. Failing will happen to everyone and I'm not afraid to fail. The only thing I'm afraid off is quitting. You could fail over and over again but the important thing is to get back up and try again. If you fell 8 times get up 9. Do you think if Derek Jeter quite he would be where he is today? No no he wouldn't he keep trying and never gave up and got to were he is today and was probably the best player this century has seen. This quote doesn't even have to be for just athletes people could live by this. If you want to achieve something you have to first fail at it. Failure is okay and if you learn from your mistakes and keep getting back up and truing you will defiantly succeed one time or another. For example if you fail at running a mile and just can't do it, its okay just pace at it and do it everyday and eventually you will be able to run that mile and be able to do it. This could even be applied to my everyday life. When i go to the gym I sometimes fail at lifting heavier weights especially deadlifting. But i didn't give up and just build my way up and made sure my stance was right and etc. And one day i got to the weight I've been wanting to lift. So just in general this is a great quote and shows how smart and talented Derek Jeter really is.

  18. I feel that Derek Jeter's quote on success " that you're not afraid to fail. Im not afraid to fail. Ive done it quite a bit." is a valuable quote/ statement. Its valuable because it shows that he's a professional athlete and he can admit to failing things. But after failing he tries his hardest to get better and succeed. If he was afraid of failing then he wouldn't have tried in the first place and him trying things and not being afraid to fail has brought him to where he is today. A known and admired professional athlete. This is a valuable statement that can be applied to anyone. It can be applied to anyone because for anything you ever do you either fail or succeed. For example, if you're too scared to try a sport because you're afraid of failing then you wouldn't have a chance to succeed either. Maybe you would have succeeded and loved that sport? Being afraid holds a lot of people back from doing things they would actually be good at if they tried and looked past the option of failing. What if Derek Jeter never tried baseball because he was afraid to fail?

  19. Derek Jeters quote can apply to everyone no matter what they are doing. The topic of failure is so relatable because everyone in the world has failed one time or another. We learn from our from our failures in order to become better at something. This is why Jeter says the key to success is to not be afraid of failure, because you need to excel at something to be successful and if you don’t gain experience through your failed attempts you can never do that. For example, professional athletes learn from what they do wrong to become better and more skilled at their jobs. No one is born and instantly becomes an outstanding athlete. Even if someone is born with natural talent for something they still need to train and practice. While practicing those athletes fail and those failures help them know what not to do ever again, which makes them better players. Although it may sound weird, without failure we wouldn’t become great at anything, because thats how we become amazing athletes, scientists, or lawyers. Humans can’t be afraid of failure because that's how we’ve come so far as people today, by learning from our mistakes.

  20. I believe that the quote "that you're not afraid to fail. Im not afraid to fail. Ive done it quite a bit" by Derek Jeter can be applied to anything even outside of sports. For example if you fail a test or get a grade that you didnt like in school you dont just give up and keep failing. What you do is learn from that mistake and try to fix it. So that next time when you try to set off for that goal you become one step closer to completing it. Once you understand that and apply it sooner or later that goal that you aimed for will be accomplished. Jeters quote is inspiring to people and can relate with many situations.

  21. I think that the quote Derek Jeter said is very important to everyone. If you think that you are going to fail\, you most likely will fail. Having a positive attitude is the key to success in life. If you do fail, don't be afraid to. No one is perfect, no one will never make a mistake in their life. Its natural. If you get all worked up over a mistake you will be more likely to make more mistakes after wards." You will miss 100% of the shots you don't take" you have to take chances to succeed. If you mess up try your best to fix it. Don't be afraid of mistakes. If you are afraid to fail, you would be to afraid to try and take a chance. Derek Jeter most likely took many chances in his career and messed up at times, but the main thing is that he wasn't afraid to fail knowing that failure is normal. But it is not a failure until u decided to give up. In school many students make mistakes, and give up. That's were they go wrong, you need to fix those mistakes not just give up on them. If more people listened to this quote. There would be less failures in word

  22. This quote is very important. People think because of one or two failures they cannot accommplish anything when in reality they just need to try a little harder. They dwell on the failures they've had instead of everything good they have done, Most people dont try because they think there just gonna fail, but if they tried harder they would be so much more successful. They cant give up as easy. If you don't try you'll never know what your capable of.
