In honor of Derek Jeter’s retirement, I would like you to reflect on the following quote and respond in no less than 200 words.
Jeter says a key to success is “that you’re not afraid to fail. I’m not afraid to fail. I’ve done it quite a bit.”
Do you feel this is a valuable statement and can be applied to anyone, not just a professional athlete? Explain how this can be applied to your everyday life by using specific examples.
Everybody has a goal in life that revolves around success or succeeding. Derek Jeter says, “that you’re not afraid to fail. I’m not afraid to fail. I've done it quite a bit.”. I think this quote doesn't just apply to athletes but to an average human being. In order to reach your goal you must go through a trial and error. There is no such thing to have a guaranteed smooth road ahead of you. People will always have a few ups and downs. What Derek is trying to say is that even he had those times where things didn't go as he wanted them to. I can relate to this statement by not being such a perfectionist in everything I do ,and try not to be so hard on myself when I don’t like how something is. For example, when I get a not-so-good grade on a test. I immediately think how bad it will affect my grade and not thinking on how I can improve. Another time can be when i work on a project I’m afraid to fail so I put too much pressure on myself to complete the task. Overall, I think Derek Jeter is trying to say that a few mistakes is okay and it won’t affect you as bad as you think.
ReplyDeleteWhen Maira said how when she works on a project and she's afraid to fail so she puts too much pressure on herself to complete it, I do that all the time. I like that example a lot because i feel like a lot of people can relate to it.
DeleteI completely agree!
DeleteI totally agree because I think everybody can relate to her response!
DeleteDerek Jeter has once said that a key to success is "that you're not afraid to fail. I'm not afraid to fail. I've done it quite a bit.". What Derek Jeter means by that is that it's ok to fail. Everyone fails or makes a mistake in their lifetime. No one is perfect. His quote can be applied to anyone, not just professional athletes. Like me, I fail and make mistakes all the time. For example, one time, I didn't study for my history test because I was worried about my science test so I spent the whole day studying for science. The next day, I ended up getting a 91 on my history test. I was actually quite surprised that I got an A even though I didn't study. On my science test, i ended up getting an 88. I spent the whole day studying for it and i got a B. I was hoping for an A, but I wasn't depressed about getting a B. I knew that i tried my best and that's what counts. In conclusion, when Derek Jeter says that the key to success is "that you're not afraid to fail. I'm not afraid to fail. I've done it quite a lot", he's saying to everyone, not just professional athletes, that failing something, whether it be a sport, class, test, quiz, anything, it's not a big deal because no one is perfect and everyone fails or makes a mistake all the time.
ReplyDeleteI agree. And I like how you put your own example to show how you've failed before.
DeleteI agree with your response and I like how you related it to a real situation.

ReplyDeleteGood reply, but I think you should've brought up a real life situation that can happen to someone like us instead of Jeter himself.
DeleteDerek Jeter once said that the key to success was ," that you're not afraid to fail. I'm not afraid to fail. I've done it quite a bit." He as we all know, is an athlete, but this doesn't only apply to sports. This quote can be applied to anybody. If you're afraid to fail you can't try new things and find new interests. There's a chance at failing in everything we do. If we fail once and give up, then we will never succeed. For example, say an interview for a job that fits your career. If u fail at the first interview and give up, what will you do next time. Just give up on that career that you have worked countless hours on. You can't be afraid to fail in anything. Failure is a part of life and it will happen to everybody at one point or another. Your girlfriend breaks up with you. You get another one. You loose that one football game. You forget about it the next time and try harder then you did the time before. You get a bad grade on a test. What do you do, you suck it up, start studying, and do better next time. It's true that if your afraid to fail you won't make it anywhere. That applys to everyone, not just professional athletes.
ReplyDeleteDerek Jeter says a key to success is “that you’re not afraid to fail. I’m not afraid to fail. I’ve done it quite a bit.” I believe that this is a very valuable statement. Everybody fails at least once in their lives. Derek Jeter's statement can absolutely be applied to everyone because of the reason that everyone fails once in a while.
ReplyDeleteOf course everyone wants to succeed and of course it is always good to succeed, but when you fail it should only make you want to work towards not failing, and to do better at what you failed at. I remember back in 2011, Derek Jeter himself was struggling in the first half of the season. He realized what he was doing wrong and worked at it and fixed it. In the second half of the 2011 season Jeter hit much better with a 327 batting average. That is why I believe Jeter's quote means that its OK to fail as long as you work hard to improve on what failed you on.
Derek Jeter once said “that you’re not afraid to fail. I’m not afraid to fail. I’ve done it quite a bit.” Derek has failed many times. For example, he lost in the 2001 World Series to the Arizona Diamondbacks and most of the games this year. Mr. Jeter as a rookie in 1995 lost to the Seattle Mariners in the first round of the playoffs. Jeter doesn't like to fail, but when he does, he accepts it, learns from it, and move on in life. That is what you have to do, not as an. athlete, but a as a person that has a regular job or a child in school. This statement can apply to anyones life in whatever they do. Failing can be small like failing a test, or forgetting a binder, or something big like losing a very important game for your team. Making mental mistakes like not saying something you want to say to someone. Everyone fails everyday whether it is big or small, nobody is perfect. Even the best fail, Michael Jordan has missed so many last second shots, failing for his team and now he has 5 NBA finals wins. Its not how many times you fall, it's how many times you get back up and bounce back from your mistakes.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree and i like the last sentence where it wraps up everything you said.
DeleteI agree. You're essay is very good through out.
DeleteI think this quote is very relatable to just about everybody on this planet. I know I'm my life as well as other people's there has been more failures then successes, as sad as that sounds. You also don't have to be a professional anything for this to apply to yourself, just a human being. Personally I need to follow these wise words just a bit closer. I get extremely frustrated, angry even, when I don't do something right. Sometimes it even affects the way I act for the entire day after that one failure. If maybe I had heard what Derek Jeter once said maybe I'd be slightly more successful. Who knows? All I know now is that I'll certainly be taking it into consideration.
ReplyDeleteI completley agree with your responce. I like how put you're personal input on how this quote could almost help a person understand their feelings when one has to deal with a loss sport or non sport realted.
DeleteI agree!!
DeleteGreat job!
DeleteI believe that its a value statement and it can be applied for anyone and not just athletes. Failing something can be a good thing because you can learn from your mistakes and you can improve them and get better. This can apply to everybody; athletes, cooks, scientists, and teachers there always failing but they learn from there mistakes. I have failed before, being late to class. But I found shortcuts to get to class to class and I'm not late. Its been going on for century's now when its looking for cures in medicine or even starting a a colony its been going on since the begging of time. So Derek Jeter quote can relate to everyday lives and relates to everybody.
ReplyDeleteI like how you put your own example in there!
DeleteJeter says a key to success is “that you’re not afraid to fail. I’m not afraid to fail. I’ve done it quite a bit.” I feel like this is a vauable statement because it does apply to everyone and not just professional althletes. Everyone fails at something at least once in their lifetime. I've done it multiple times. I'm not the best in math and I recently took at test that I didn't quite do so well on. I stayed after and got some help to see what I was doing wrong. The next test I did much better on. Failing actually helps you to succeed because if you do something wrong you can fix your mistakes and get better. Jeter's statement most definitely applies to eveyone not just althletes like himself.
ReplyDeleteDerek Jeter once said that a key to success is "that you're not afraid to fail. I'm not afraid to fail. I've done it quite a bit." I feel that this statement is very valuable and can apply to anyone, not just a professional athlete. Nobody is perfect which means that everybody fails at something in their lifetime wether it be a test, quiz, or even a sport. I have failed in my life many different times. Last year during baseball season I struggled at the plate. I kept popping up the ball which is not good. During that time I had my dad video tape one of my at-bats. Later on after the game I watched the video and noticed that I was dropping my back shoulder. During the off season I worked hard on keeping my back shoulder up during batting practice. The next season I came back hitting line drives and hard ground balls. In Jeter's statement he is basically saying that it is ok to fail as long as you work hard to fix the mistakes.Obviously it paid off for Jeter in the long run as he finished his career as one of the greatest players to ever play the game of baseball.
ReplyDeleteDerek Jeter has once said that they key to success is "that your not afraid to fail. I'm not afraid to fail. I've done it quite a bit." In my opinion I think Derek is trying to say is that life is full of failure and mistakes. Nobody in this world is perfect, nobody. Even though Derek Jeter is an athlete doesn't mean he's perfect. We don't his entire background but I'm sure he wasn't a perfect kid. Yes, Derek Jeter knows how to play but did he hit a homerun every game? No, that's because he isn't perfect. He had is ups and downs but that's okay because mistakes and failure is just apart of life. For example, getting a bad grade on a test. When you get a bad grade on a test it affects your entire grade overall. You learn from your mistakes. Now, next time you have a test you know that you have to study to get a better grade. Another example is making an error on the softball field during a game. Softball is full of errors but you just have to never give up and practice hard. You know what they say, practice how you play. There are many examples because nobody is perfect!
ReplyDeleteDerek Jeter once said that the key to success is “that you’re not afraid to fall. I’m not afraid to fall. I’ve done it quite a bit.” This can easily apply to all athletes of all different levels. No matter if you’re in Little League or a professional athlete, you’re going to win but you’ll still loose. And you need to know how to get back up and accept that it’s going to happen, which Jeter clearly stated in this quote. But, this quote can relate to different situations off the field. Athlete or not in your life you’ll fail at something you do. Something that Jeter also says in the quote is “I’ve done it quite a bit”. Which shows Jeter is very humble and accepting of his sport. This relates to areas away from sports as well because being a good sport about anything you do is a great quality to have. This quote can personally relate to something I’ve done in my life as well. For example, I failed my math quiz and didn’t just give up. I kept studying and by the time the test came I was prepared and passed it.
ReplyDeleteThe great Derek jeter once said the key to success"that your not afraid to fail I'm not afraid to fail I've done it quiet a bit." What Derek jeter is trying to say is that failing is all part of life. You need to fail in life to reach the goals you want. What you want in life is not just a straight path so it's any easy thing to accomplish. The goal you want is going to be the hardest thing to reach. So what jeter says is that when you fail at something, that failure could lead you one step closer to reaching your dream. To become successful in anything you want to do you need to fail at it first. When you fail the first time you can fix what happened and get better at it every single time. When you fail at something it's only to improve what you could of done wrong. If you don't fail at anything then that's not working to become who you want to be. As soon as you fail at something you want to do then you know your working to become successful.
ReplyDeleteDerek Jeter had once said that the key to success is "that if you're not afraid to fail. I'm not afraid to fail. I've done it quite a bit." This most certainly can apply to anyone, not just athletes. It shows that everyone makes mistakes , even your favorite athletes do. So you shouldn't be afraid to do things because you're afraid to fail. For example if you do terrible on your homework, it's okay. You just need to work a little harder on what it was about. Also this quote can help people get rid of their fear of presenting. Everyone makes mistakes and fumbles their words. It's completely fine to do that so don't be scared to present a project. You just always have to remember that no one has never failed at something , I know I have. For example I've never been good at science. And a few times I failed my quizzes but that didn't stop me from trying to get a good grade. So I would study as much as I could and never failed a test. So don't feel discouraged if you fail. Just keep trying and I'm sure you'll get it. Don't be afraid that everyone will make fun of you, Surely they wont. Failing is not that big of a deal as long as you try hard and learn from your mistakes.
ReplyDeleteDerek Jeter has once said "that if you're not afraid to fail. I'm not afraid to fail. I've done it quite a bit." I agree with these words because no one should be afraid of failing. Failing is a part of being a human. If you do not do it is like you are a robot. People fail all the time in there every day life's. For example you could get a bad grade on a test or have a bad day in your sport. Even the people that you look up to make mistakes. Such as Plecico Burrius the former player for the New York Giants. He accidently shot himself in the leg in a public bar and got arrested for holding a weapon. It does not just matter to who the person is that makes the mistake because we are all human. It does not matter if they make a billon dollars a year they all make mistakes and everybody fails at some point in there life.
ReplyDeleteWhen derek Jeter says that a key to success is “that you’re not afraid to fail. I’m not afraid to fail. I’ve done it quite a bit.” I feel this quote reins true in my life. I personally can relate to it in many ways, one of the ways being in football. Say if I miss a tackle i can’t put my head down because of one missed tackle. I need to keep my head high and focus on the next thing that the opposing offense throws at me. This can also apply to me in terms of school. If I fail a test i can’t remorse it. I have to keep focused and study harder, work harder so i can get a better grade. I have always used this philosophy during my everyday life. It is one of the best things anyone can ever learn from. This has helped me through many situations in the past. I wish everyone could see this quote from Derek Jeter because if they did they would have better lives. I know from personal experience that this is a great thing to follow and i recommend it to everyone.
