Period 1 Blog #1 September 19

In the short story, “Initiation” by Sylvia Plath, Millicent and Liane Morris, two pledges going through initiation to the high school sorority, were discussing what it would be like when they were finally in the sorority.  After Liane explains that she knows what it will be like because her sister belonged, Millicent realizes “...it’s just a sort of exclusive social group…”

“I guess so… though that’s a funny way of putting it.  But it sure gives a girl prestige* value.  My sister started going steady with the captain of the football team after she got in.  Not bad, I say.”

*prestige-relating to power or status impress

After carefully reading Liane’s response regarding her feelings of joining the sorority,  what does she believe belonging will do for her?  How does Liane value herself as a sorority sister as opposed to before she was invited?  Pay specific attention to what she thinks being in the sorority will do for a girl.  Do you believe Liane’s views on the perks of sorority are healthy or is she putting too much value on belonging?  Explain in detail in no less than 200 words.

  1. I think that Liane doesn’t belong in the club because she seems like that type of person that shouldn’t be in. Also she doesn’t need a club because she doesn’t need to be tell what she can do or not do. She is an awesome person that she shouldn’t be judge. I feel that just because you join something doesn’t mean that you have to change to be accepted to be on that club. Basically, the reason that Liane is doing this is because she want to be popular or just doesn’t want to feel like the outcast. Even though she feels like she shouldn’t be in the club that they are just going to judge her, she should be in a club with real friends. Honestly, if I was her, I would off left that club because I dont want to be friends with fake people. A lot of people these day join clubs so they can make friends or just have fun, but there’s other clubs that just make fun of you and for who you really are because i know what Liane is doing through. I feel like she shouldn't be in this clubs because they are making fun of her and wasting her time with all this crap that she shouldn’t be going through to just to be accepted into a club I think that Liane doesn’t belong in the club because she seems like that type of person that shouldn’t be in. 2. Liane feels like once she starts belonging to the sorority group she will become more accepted and included by others. She feels like it will make her more happy eternally and give her more self confidence. Before she got invited to the sorority she felt unhappy and unsure about herself. Once she began, Liane became happy, content and fulfilled. Throughout the story (obviously after she started the sorority) she portrayed cockiness. The club appears to be like it was intended for people to become popular and well known. In my opinion, Liane's putting too much value on belonging in the sorority. There are more than enough people in her school that will accept her for her and won't expect her to change due to a club. There are other alternative ways to approach the situation. I think the sorority benefited Liane but also didn't.

  3. Liane believes that this sorority will make her "popular" and get her a higher "rank" among her friends and in school. Liane values herself better than everyone that isn't in the sorority, but she isn't rude and mean to the "gophers" of the sorority. She values herself better because she believes the sorority is a exclusive social group that not everyone can get in. I don’t think it is healthy for her because all of that is very practical and just a social view and wont help her in the long way. The students in the school could also be encouraging this behavior because the girls not in the sorority look up to the ones that are in it. Also the boys will give more attention to the girls in the sorority, rather than the ones not in the sorority. An example could be how she said that her sister was in the sorority and right after she joined the captain of the football team started going steady with her. She thinks that the sorority gives her a prestige. It may give her prestige for now, but this is only high school and when she hits the real world, her sorority prestige won't mean anything and she’ll know it was nothing more than a social group rather than like a lifestyle.

  4. Liane thinks that if she goes into the sorority group she will feel like she is more popular and more appreciated. But if people really need to do all of these things to a new member that just means they don't want you to feel like that you are a part of them. Bets are that the people that are already in the group didn't have to go through what she is going through. That just says you shouldn't go into that group. This is bullying and nobody wants to get bullied so why do it to somebody else. By calling someone a name is wrong but this group benefited her by getting stronger on the inside and how to stand up to people no matter what bridge she crosses. I think she realizes that this also cannot be the best choice and do what she think is best.

  5. I personally think that Liane thinks that after joining the sorority that she can get any guy in the school because since someone else joined the sorority and then went steady with the captain of the football team. So shes basically saying that any guy would want to go steady wit her after her joining the sorority. Liane values herself as a sorority sister by an honorary member basically because if she gets through the initiation, shes in the sorority. And before she was invited to be in the sorority, she thought herself as a low class nobody who had n o social life what so ever. I think that its no so healthy for Liane to join the sorority because if you really think about it, shes relying on other peoples popularity to make herself popular. So shes putting to much value on belonging because if she does the right things and hangs with the right crowd he can basically make herself popular on her own. I mean if you think about it, popularity can be so stupid because its all about who you know and what you do. So Liane doesn't have to be so called " popular ", she can become who she wants to be. You don't have to be in a sorority to be recognized.

  6. Laine feels that joining this sorority will give her importance . She feels that if she's in this group , she will be special , that she will be important and not just some regular teenage girl . Before Laine joined this group , she was a very shy timid person .

  7. I think shes trying to join the club to become more popular and try to talk to guys in my opinion she only wants to join to try to be noticed and know around the area and try to be like other people but I don't know.

  8. In my opinion, I think that laine is only joinig this club to get noticed and can stand out. Until she joined, she was always shy and very timid. This is bullying and I honestly think she is just another member who is just the same like everyone else in their club. Laine shouldnt go through all that humiliation just to be popular but by doing this she became a stronger person that could speak their mind.

  9. I think that Laine is only trying to join this sorority to get more popularity. By doing this shes going to become a bad person. What i mean by this is that shes going to change. She might gain more friends but loose even more. A person does not need to go through all of that that the 'big sisters' do to them to become more popular and stand out even more. Before she was a shy girl. She should of changed another way. This is going to mess her up.
